Book Buzz: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Were you one of those who walked with us down the yellow brick road towards Emerald City and had your wish granted?

During recess last Friday, our Library CCA members approached Beacons to participate in activities related to the novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

One of the activities we had was for Beacons to take a piece of Post-It, write the answers to some questions, and paste them on the characters from the novel like so.

Our questions were:

  1. What is a word with the same meaning (synonym) as brave?
  2. What does it mean when someone says that “you have a heart”?
  3. What does it mean when someone says that “you have a brain”?
And how do we increase our grey matter?
  4. What does Dorothy have to learn in order to go home?

Our Library CCA representatives even had a pre-recorded Readers’ Theatre and this recording was played during recess.

With this buzz about The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, are you wondering what the story is about?

First published in 1900, the novel tells the story of Dorothy, a simple and optimistic girl living with her adoptive parents and her pet dog, Toto, in Kansas. After getting caught in a tornado, Dorothy and Toto find themselves in the Land of Oz. There, she meets Scarecrow who wants a brain, Tin Woodman who wants a brain, and the Cowardly Lion who wants courage. All Dorothy wanted was to go back home. To have their wishes granted, they had to go look for the The Wizard of Oz in Emerald City, but he won’t just grant them their wishes without a condition. They have to defeat the Wicked Witch in Winkie Country but no one has ever been able to defeat the witch! Would they be able to?

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is available at our Beacon library! Borrow the book and read on to find out if Dorothy will ever get home and if her newfound friends will get what they want from the The Wizard of Oz.

Library activities will run as per usual next week and do remember that you can collect points for completing the library activities and for borrowing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at our library.

Happy reading, Beacons!

Learning from Life Stories & Celebrating Friendship

Were you able to catch everything Mdm Yan shared during morning assembly? No? Fear not, we have the information here!

There are many avenues for learning and one of the best ways to learn is by knowing and understanding someone’s life story. In our “Reality Meets Fiction” area, you will be introduced to a collection of books from various genres that tells life stories of the characters and the trials and tribulations they go through. Give them a read and see if you can learn from them!

We recently commemorated International Friendship Day where we watched a performance and had some class activities which focused on our ASEAN neighbours.

To further commemorate IFD, we have a new collection of books which does not just emphasise on friendship, but also on character building. Do take a look. You definitely won’t miss that colourful section in the library!

Lastly, we have a little guessing game for you where you can earn prizes. We have silhouettes of famous figures in history. Guess them correctly and get a prize. Hints can be found from the books displayed directly below these silhouettes.

Do remember to continue collecting your coupons by reading books and taking part in our library activities!

Happy reading, Beacons!

Together We Keep Singapore Strong

Every year, Singaporeans commemorate Total Defence Day on 15th February – the day Singapore fell to the Japanese during World War II.

The library has set up a display with books that tell how Singapore was like during the war, and how we can contribute to our country’s defence through its five pillars.

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

The library will be running activities during recess and lunch that will allow you to continue to earn your mystery coupons.
